FIRST® (For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology) is a 501(c)(3) not-for-profit organization founded in 1989 by inventor Dean Kamen and devoted to helping young people discover and develop a passion for science, technology, engineering, and math. Supported by a strong network of sponsors and volunteers, FIRST provides four programs: the FIRST® Robotics Competition (FRCTM) and the FIRST® Tech Challenge (FTC®) for Grades 9-12 (ages 14-18); the FIRST® LEGO® League (FLL®) for Grades 4-8 (ages 9-14); and the Junior FIRST® LEGO® League (Jr.FLL) for Grades K-3 (ages 6-9). Participants win recognition, gain self confidence, develop people and life skills, make new friends, and perhaps discover an unforeseen career path. The 2008/09 FIRST season attracted more than 196,000 young people and more than 85,000 mentors, coaches, and volunteers from 51 countries.
